Head of the Gestapo in Lyon from 1943 to 1945, Klaus Barbie was in charge of fighting the member of the Resistance, Communists and Jews. His particularly brutal interrogation methods earned him the nickname of the "Butcher of Lyon".
It wasn't until 1983 that he was arrested in Bolivia / He was arrested only in 1983 in Bolivia, where he had been living under a false identity. His arrest marked the completion of a decade-long hunt led by Serge and Beate Klarsfeld.
In 1987, Klaus Barbie was judged for crimes against humanity before the Rhône Assize Court, which sentenced him to life imprisonment. The first trial of its kind in France, this high-profile event represented a key moment in the history of the Second World War.
